How to clean silver: a step by step guide

Silver is a precious metal that can oxidize and lose its luster over time. Here is a step by step guide on how to clean silver and make it shine like new.

What do you need

  • Waterfall
  • Sodium bicarbonate
  • salt
  • Tinfoil
  • A heat resistant container
  • A soft cloth

Instructions

  1. Preparing the silver bath : Fill a heatproof container with hot water. Add a tablespoon of salt and a tablespoon of baking soda. Stir until dissolved.

  2. Preparing the silver : Line the container with a sheet of aluminum foil, shiny side up. Place your silver items on the foil, making sure they are touching the foil.

  3. Cleaning : Pour the solution of hot water, salt and baking soda on the silver objects. Leave to soak for about 30 minutes.

  4. Rinsing and drying : After 30 minutes, remove the silver items from the solution and rinse them with warm water. Dry the items carefully with a soft cloth.

By following these simple steps, your silver items should shine like new again. Remember, however, that some antique or delicate silver items may require professional cleaning. If you are unsure, it is always best to consult an expert.
